Guardian and Observer digital archive

Guardian and Observer archive image

C2k is delighted to announce that The Guardian and Observer Digital Archives will be available via the LearningNI  Net work page from early January 2009!

The Guardian and Observer digital archive is a fully searchable, on-line database of every article, photograph and advertisement published in the Observer and Guardian newspapers between 1791 and 2003. Articles and photographs can be saved, printed or copied into pupils’ and teachers’ own topic and project work, to enrich learning and help bring subjects to life.

Users can choose to browse by date and can view entire Guardian and Observer issues on- screen. Alternatively, advanced search options enable a single keyword or name to pinpoint relevant articles. A picture file enables users to copy images for Microsoft Word and Powerpoint documents.

Teachers have found the archive to be a valuable tool for supporting a wide range of curriculum subjects including English, History, Citizenship, Geography and Science. As the archive includes a vast number of photographs and advertisements, lessons can be tailored for Key Stage 1 to sixth form classes.

It is ideally suited for both independent learning and teacher-led interactive whiteboard activities.

Becta ISP accreditation for C2k

C2k was awarded full accreditation by Becta for the quality of its schools’ internet service provision in 2009. C2k is working towards renewing the accreditation for 2010.

The Becta Internet Service Provider accreditation means that all pupils and teachers in NI's primary and secondary schools can be assured that the internet services  provided by C2k meet required guidelines.  C2k’s internet service is constantly monitored to ensure that children and teachers in NI are protected against offensive emails and web site content.
